Questions and answers

Short, plain answers. Choose the section that fits you.

For families

For anyone who has just lost someone, or is helping a family who has.

The first hours

What should we do first?

Nothing has to be decided in the first hour. Take time with your loved one. When you are ready, open Step 1: Right now for a gentle checklist that goes from the first hour through the first two weeks.

Does Clear Path After arrange the funeral or cremation?

No. We help you organize and prepare: what to do first, which licensed providers are nearby, and what to ask. You choose a provider and sign with them directly. We never take a fee from any funeral home, crematory or cemetery.

Who wrote this guide?

Clear Path After was written by a nurse administrator with more than 20 years at the bedside, after watching many families face these hours without a clear next step.

Choosing care

How do I find a funeral home or crematory?

Open Step 2: Choose care and type your city or ZIP code. You will see licensed places near you, with prices from each one's own posted price list. Call two or three before you choose.

Are the prices exact?

They come from each provider's posted price list and can change. Always confirm the total price by phone before you agree to anything. The phone script in Step 2 tells you what to ask.

Are these providers licensed? Do they pay to be listed?

Every funeral home, crematory and cemetery shown has a California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau license number on record. No one pays to be listed or to appear higher, and we never take a commission.

A provider is missing or its details are wrong.

Please tell us on the Help page and choose "A provider listing is wrong." We check and correct listings.

How many death certificates will we need?

Most families need 5 to 10 certified copies. In Los Angeles County each one costs $26. The funeral home can usually order them for you.

Telling family and the Family Pass

Is Clear Path After free?

Yes. The checklist, the provider finder, the death-notice message and the obituary writer are free. The optional Family Pass ($49, one time) adds a photo notice we email for you, a lasting memorial page and a paperwork kit.

What is in the Family Pass?
  • A photo notice card, emailed to up to 100 family and friends, and easy to share by text or WhatsApp
  • A lasting memorial page where people can share memories
  • A paperwork kit: one letter you fill in once and reuse for banks, insurers, employers and agencies

It's one payment with no subscription. You see a preview before anything is sent. See a finished example.

Can the notice be in Spanish?

Yes. When you make a photo notice you can choose English or Spanish for the notice.

I paid, but I don't see my Family Pass.
  1. Use the same phone or computer you paid on, and open clearpathafter.com.
  2. If it still doesn't appear, find the Stripe receipt in your email and send us a note on the Help page with the email you paid with. We'll set it up for you.
How do I give the Family Pass to someone else?

Choose "Give them the Family Pass" under the notice step. After paying, you get a private link to send the family. They open it to set up the notice and memorial page at no cost.

Your phone and your privacy

Is it the same on my phone and my computer?

Yes. It's the same guide with the same tools. The layout simply adjusts to your screen, and on a phone a step bar at the bottom lets you move between steps.

What does the QR code do?

It opens this same guide on your phone. Nothing is different. If a hospice or organization gave you its own QR code, you'll see their name and support lines too.

Can I keep it on my phone?

Yes. On the home page, choose "Keep this guide on your phone." It opens like an app, with no app store and no account, and your checklist still opens with a weak signal at the hospital.

Do I need an account? Is my information private?

No account is needed. Your checklist stays on your phone. Nothing is sent until you press Send. See our Privacy page for details.

Send us a note

If you're having a hard time, you don't have to carry it alone. In the US you can call or text 988 any time to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, and hospice bereavement teams often support families for a year or more after a loss.

For hospices and organizations

For hospices, home health, employers, life insurers and funeral homes.

Who it's for and what it does

Who is Clear Path After for?

Hospices and home health agencies, employers (HR and EAP), life insurers and funeral homes. Anyone who supports a family after a loss.

What do families get?

A calm, step-by-step guide on their phone, under your name, logo and color: what to do first, licensed and fairly priced providers nearby, a death-notice message, an obituary writer, and your own support lines, such as your bereavement team, chaplain, EAP or claims line.

When and how do we share it?

Share your own link or QR code at the time of death, in discharge packets and bereavement letters, through a benefits portal, or with claim paperwork.

Does it replace our bereavement team?

No. It shows your team and resources right where families need them, and answers the practical "what do we do now?" questions, so your staff spend less time on them.

Can we see it before we buy?

Yes. Watch the two-minute video, open what families see, or see a finished notice and memorial.
